Video Enhancement Using Neural Networks

Having grown up as a computer geek, the use of computing technology to enhance images has always fascinated me. I know we’ve all seen this done in spy movies, but these clips of an actual video having been enhanced are pretty amazing to me!

First, the original video from an 1895 black & white film:

Now, the video enhanced by Denis Shiryaev using neural networks to improve the resolution and frame rate of the original:

I’m a photo guy, not a video guy, so I’m not up to speed on the video apps available to do such processing. I can intuit how increasing resolution of a film can be done (by analyzing surrounding pixels from one frame to another to provide missing pictorial information), and it’s nice to see it’s actually been done.

I can’t see how single photos can be enhanced, though (as seen in spy movies), since there’s no source of the missing detail. But if it can be done, I’d buy the app to do so to enhance my photos!
