Year of the Pig/Boar

Happy New Year!

Few Chinese Horoscope books contain overall prognostications for the year. In my large collection of these books, one of the few that does is the first edition of Theodora Lau’s The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes, published in 1979. Unfortunately, in the later editions of this book, her overall predictions for each year have been removed.

To provide my friends with this interesting information, here is Ms. Lau’s overall forecast for the Year of the Pig – what she calls the Year of the Boar – plus her predictions for how individuals will fare this year, given the animal that represents their birth year. (To determine what animal you are, see my table of animals for birth dates.) You might also like to check out how accurate her predictions were for last year, the Year of the Dog.

February 5, 2019 – January 24, 2020

A year of goodwill to all. An excellent climate for business, and industry in general will prevail. People will be more free and easy on the whole and the complaisant attitude of the Boar will generate a feeling of abundance. But in spite of the favorable auspices here, like the Boar we will hesitate, waver and undermine our own abilities when opportunity calls.

The Boar’s year is one of plenty. La dolce vita is very much advocated and practiced by the sensual Boar. If life is worth living, it must be lived to the hilt. Such is his motto. The Boar is as lavish with gifts as he is with affection. He takes pride in being chivalrous and extravagant. It would be ill-advised to overspend this year or make sizable investments without thorough investigation. We may also come to regret impulsive acts of generosity made on the spur of the moment.

The fortunate Boar carries with him contentment and security. This is one year in which you could be happy without having or needing a lot of success or money to make it so. There will not seem to be many hurdles to overcome and the placid Boar radiates a sense of well-being. Still, a great deal of prudence is recommended in money matters, as the Boar is always susceptible to swindlers.

This year will find us entertaining a lot more than usual and getting ourselves involved in all sorts of charitable and social functions. We find it a lot easier to make friends in the Boar’s tolerant and expansive atmosphere.

Watch out for excesses, though, as the Boar tends to overindulge himself in anything when given the opportunity. Weight watchers will have a tough time and may face losing (or rather, gaining) battles.

How you will fare in the Year of the Boar

Rat              Not much progress to be made in business or investments. A time for the Rat to consolidate. Friends and family members make excessive demands on his time and money. If not careful, his illnesses could develop complications. In place of illness, he could lose some money or personal belonging.

Ox             A busy time in store for the Ox native. He will not net much results to show for his conscientious efforts, but he should not fret as he will make valuable contacts for later use. A mixed year for the Ox, as family troubles and some friction at work may disturb him. On the whole, he will fare quite well as the numerous problems that beset him will be little ones.

Tiger        The Tiger will have to curb his free-spending ways this year as the prosperity that comes in the beginning of the year will not last for long. He must be on guard against high-risk investments and new associates.

Rabbit      A mixed time for the Rabbit. Things look brighter than they actually are and he must be very realistic and avoid making promises or handing out guarantees. Unlikely difficulties have a tendency of cropping up this year so he must not be overconfident and must take every precaution to protect his interests.

Dragon      A good year as things go back to normal for the Dragon and luck shines through the dark clouds that hovered over him during the Dog’s reign. He could still have mixed results at work or financially but there are few major problems. He will have to travel or entertain a lot but no troubles are foreseen in his family life.

Snake        A hectic and mixed year. The Snake will have to exert maximum energy for minimum gains. He may suffer financial mishaps caused by poor judgment, a problem with the law or separation from someone close to him. A time to look before he leaps.

Horse        Not-so-favorable year as some of the Horse’s success is destroyed by outside interference and illness delays plans and progress. Investments and projects develop snags and he must deal with many complications. His troubles should start to fade with the onset of winter.

Sheep        A fair year for the Sheep as he recovers from his past troubles. His position is still shaky and he is unable to relax as he suspects friends or associates of deceiving him. Home life could be neglected by him. He will have access to funds previously withheld from him.

Monkey    An active but trying year. The Monkey will have business disputes, financial or legal troubles or even complications in his illnesses. His problems can be resolved but not without much compromising. He will have to make difficult concessions or take insults from his enemies. A year in which he should not even trust his best friend. Joint ventures will prove unrewarding or even dangerous.

Rooster    A disturbing year for the Rooster as worries caused by unexpected difficulties plague him. His home life suffers or he may have temporary setbacks in his career. Trusted associates may also give him wrong advice or encourage him to spend beyond his means. A year to discount good news and plan prudently.

Dog          A calm year. The Dog person could make some gains through speculations or reap unlikely benefits. Results cannot be as good as he wishes due to delays and additional expenses. A year to cultivate new and influential friends or contacts.

Boar        The Boar’s life will stabilize this year as gains and some progress are foreseen. He may still experience some friction at work or at home but no serious setbacks are indicated. He may have some persistent health problems or infection that he should attend to. New friends and opportunities dominate the winter months.
