False Memories

I had a fascinating family experience with FALSE MEMORY. It was about what transpired with the little mouse that my Mom found running around her living room.

She remembered what occurred totally differently from what I did: She caught the mouse by her entry door window vs. I caught it after she lifted the comforter on her footstool several feet away from the window. After talking about the event during dinner, I slowly persuaded her that she could not have caught the mouse as she had recalled.

I told her of research I had read about indicating that human memories usually are not sequences of details we have stored away in our brains, but rather stories that our brains construct from a few details we remember.

A Scientific American blog provides interesting details about our memories: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/mind-guest-blog/what-experts-wish-you-knew-about-false-memories/

So my Mom isn’t going crazy. False memories are just something our brains do normally!
